Wilderness and Self-Sufficiency is a three act drama for solo piano that I composed in Buffalo, NY between 2003-2006. It is a love/hate letter to the piano, an instrument that has plagued and beguiled me my whole life. Ruby is an homage to Thelonious Monk. It is a modular score of three sets of four pages - A, B, C, D. The pages may be played in any order following the sequence A, B, C, D. I composed this piece in Southampton, England around 2001. Until now, I had only heard myself play these pieces poorly and Michael Finnissy and Jeff Stadelman read through them in lessons. When I got my hands on the Spirio piano I decided to enter the notation into Dorico and create anew arrangements of these pieces.
